Netscape email and Firefox...

Very little about this on the web... I suspect because so few people use the Netscape email client.

If you use Netscape as your email client... and you install Firefox... There is a good chance Firefox will mess up your Netscape email... You may "lose" your email.

Don't worry, it is still on your computer. But the Firefox install hasn't deleted anything.

I'll be adding detail to this post as I determine what the proper steps are for recovery of the "lost emails".

This issue doesn't apply to me in particular, so I'll need time to figure out how the bug works.

Netscape emails are saved in folders by account name in the Local Settings folder under the WinXP user's "Documents and Settings" folder structure.

Look for a folder called Mozilla.

Here's the fix...

Run Netscape email.
Create new accounts with distinct names... Like "SaveMYemail"... You will need your server settings to do this. This includes SMTP and POP server names, your usernames and passwords.

Then, browse to the Mozilla folder in your applications data folder (typically c:\documents and settings\applications data\Mozilla\email).

You should see some files with large sizes, and some with your new names (SaveMYEmails, etc). Make sure Netscape email isn't running anymore, then rename your new account files.. For instance, the SaveMyEmails file can be renamed Backup_SaveMyEmails).

Okay, then rename the large file (your old emails) to "SaveMyEmails".

When Netscape email runs again, it'll open your old (newly renamed) email file... and bingo... all is recovered.
